Biography

Nimisha Karnatak is a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science at the University of Oxford, supervised by Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt and Professor Max Van Kleek. Her research interests broadly span LLM post-training and evaluation; AI safety and scalable oversight; the reliability and factuality of AI systems; and foundational questions in AI ethics and the philosophy of AI, including AI alignment. She also studies large-scale AI deployments and their wider societal and economic implications, taking an end-to-end perspective on aligning, evaluating, and responsibly deploying advanced AI systems in high-stakes settings.

Alongside her doctoral studies, Nimisha serves as an International Consultant at “” The World Bank in Washington, D.C., USA, where her work focuses on factuality, AI evaluation, and assessing the real-world impacts of multi-agent AI systems deployed at global scale. Previously, she was a Student Researcher at Google DeepMind in London focusing on multimodal co-creation and steering generative AI systems.

Prior to beginning her doctoral studies at Oxford, Nimisha worked full-time for two years as a Research Fellow at “” Microsoft Research India. Earlier in her career, she held research and internship positions at the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva, the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT-R), the Indian School of Business (ISB), and the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Her research has been published as first-author papers at premier venues including AAAI/ACM AIES, ACM CHI, ACM CSCW, and ACM TOCHI.
